Airdrie Roads Program - 2002 to 2004

featureISL was retained by the City of Airdrie to provide complete engineering services for their annual Roads Program from 2002 to 2004. The program includes all major projects, capital roadway improvements, roadway rehabilitation work and pathway projects undertaken by the City in a given year. The type of project varied widely, ranging from rehabilitation of local streets to twinning or urbanization of major arterials to construction of major bridges. Highlighted projects within the assignment include:

  • upgrading Yankee Valley Dr. from Highway 2 to East Lake Blvd
  • upgrading Big Hill Springs Road from Highway 2 to Main Street
  • reconstruction of First Avenue bridge culvert over Nose Creek
  • reconstruction and streetscaping of First Avenue gateway
  • upgrading of Highway 567 / 8 Street intersection
  • urbanization of 8 Street south of Big Hill Springs Road
  • intersection and signal upgrades
  • Highway 2 Sound Wall

For the Award-Winning First Avenue / Nose Creek crossing, ISL reassessed prior concepts for a steel girder bridge, and recommended an innovative box culvert alternative. At the time of construction, the 12.8m open bottom steel box culvert was one of the largest openings for its shape available from the manufacturer. These types of culverts are not used widely, and this is the first one of its kind used in an urban setting in Alberta. With this being a unique crossing solution, at the limits of the proven technology, special care and attention were required during construction to ensure a successful installation.

The City of Airdrie has undergone unprecedented growth in recent years. Over the course of ISL's assignment, the Roads Program grew significantly in scope, with annual tender values on the order of $6 Million. With the City's commitment to implementing the program and ISL's approach to achieving value solutions with lasting results, the City's transportation network is on-track to keep pace with the expanding development through the region.
