The Town of Okotoks’ 32 Street Crossing project was recognized for engineering excellence at the Consulting Engineers of Alberta’s Showcase Awards show on Friday night in Edmonton. This annual event celebrates engineering achievements across Alberta and shines the spotlight on technical and business excellence.
Representatives from the Town of Okotoks, lead consultant ISL Engineering and Land Services, and hydrotechnical consultant Golder Associates were on-hand to receive an Award of Merit in Transportation Infrastructure and an Award of Excellence in Water Resources and Energy Production. The 32 Street Crossing project was the only project province-wide to receive multiple awards this year.
The Award of Merit in Transportation Infrastructure recognized achievement in design and construction of the roadway under tight timelines imposed by the Federal Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, and cited the strategic importance of opening the 32 Street corridor for Okotoks and the Foothills region.
The Award of Excellence in Water Resources and Energy Production recognized the unique engineering challenges associated with relocating the Sheep River as part of the bridge crossing project. The longest recorded diversion of an alluvial mountain river in Alberta, relocating the Sheep River retained and helped preserve the Sheep River valley environment, including plant and aquatic life, for future generations.
“It was a team effort right from the beginning with the Town, ourselves and the contractors working together to deliver the project on-time and under budget.” says Cal McClary, Calgary Manager for ISL. “Okotoks brings a sustainable and careful approach to its infrastructure and ISL is proud to have worked closely with the Town through all stages of planning, design and construction of this landmark project.”
At the awards, ISL Engineering and Land Services was also recognized for Calgary’s Glenmore Trail / 37 Street SW Interchange and Memorial Drive Reversible Lane Control Systems projects.
