West Memorial Drive Sanitary Study
The 183-km West Memorial Drive Sanitary Trunk in Calgary serves 55 communities and a population exceeding 250,000.
To determine its capacity to handle surcharge issues and support city growth and redevelopment, the City of Calgary retained ISL Engineering and Land Services to conduct a comprehensive sanitary system assessment. ISL’s services included hydraulic modelling, city growth simulation, identification and assessment of upgrades and conceptual design of those upgrades.
DHI MIKE URBAN
To help determine upgrade needs, ISL employed a sophisticated, GIS-based modelling software, DHI MIKE URBAN, to assess sewer capacity under various wet weather events, as well as short-term and long-term land and population growth scenarios.
MIKE URBAN RDII
For a realistic representation of the effect of long term inflow-infiltration on the system, a MIKE URBAN Rainfall Dependent Inflow and Infiltration (RDII) formulation simulated multiple factors including soil conditions, groundwater baseflows and surface and subsurface interflow.
To complete this project, ISL developed an integrated framework for MIKE URBAN, ArcGIS and Civil 3D, thereby enhancing project efficiency and accuracy.
This study's outputs assisted the City with wastewater infrastructure planning well into the future. The greater accuracy of results also reduces the risk of unwarranted upgrades and associated tax increases for City ratepayers.
