Several Edmonton and area consulting engineering companies have come together to strengthen the communities they live and work in through a partnership with the United Way. This year for the first time, employees from the supporting companies will take part in a Consulting Engineering Challenge. All the companies involved are competing for the right to be named 2007 Consulting Engineering Challenge Winner. Click here to visit United Way website.
"There is no power to change greater than a community discovering what it cares about."
Margaret J. Wheatley
To kick off the 2008 challenge, employees from the following companies decided to unite and participate in a Day of Caring:
On Friday September 28, 54 volunteers from the engineering sector collaborated to complete an overhaul of the KARA Family Resources Centre outdoor playground. The project included rebuilding a fence, removing warped and damaged decking around trees, installing a play structure, removing and replacing a shed, purchasing materials for the play area and levelling and laying sod.
KARA Family Resource Centre, one of the 44 United Way Member Agencies, provides programs and services to parents in Edmonton in four core programming areas: Parent Education, Family Support, Early Childhood Development and Information & Referral. Without the help of these generous volunteers, this project would have been too ambitious for this not-for profit organization to complete. Now families in Edmonton's Northeast communities will have a place to interact and play with their child, attend learning-through-play environment programs, or have the peace of mind that their children are playing in a safe, encouraging environment while they are attending their Parenting in two Cultures or the How to Talk so Kids will Listen programs.
