ISL was selected to provided road and utility design services on the project, which included a four-lane, 160-metre long bridge with bicycle lanes on each side and a multi-use path on the west side, plus approach roads.
Six lanes of Highway 1 were required to remain open at all times with a design speed of 80 km/h. Detours were designed to facilitate staging of Highway 1 reprofiling and demolition of the existing King Edward overpass.
This project corrects a decades-old vertical alignment problem on Highway 1 and increases traffic capacity along King Edward Street. The safety of all road users is also increased with the added lanes, cycle lanes and separate multi-use path for vulnerable road users. The new King Edward Street underpass improves the linkage over Highway 1 for the City of Coquitlam.
Completed in 2011, the new bridge provides significant opportunities for residential development on the highway’s south side as well as additional growth opportunities for commercial and industrial development in the area.
