Located in the heart of Canmore, Elevation Place is an exciting 66,325 m2 multi-purpose facility that features a competition-size swimming pool, a water slide and lazy river, a climbing wall rated for international competition, a library and other multipurpose community spaces.
Elevation Place combines heavy timber elements with steel, concrete and stone features to provide the “mountain architecture” associated with the town.
Massive Glulam Beams
The pool area features numerous 2.4 metre tall glulam beams spanning over 28 metres and weighing nearly 15,880 kilograms, the largest ever manufactured in western Canada.
A high groundwater table required resolving positive and negative pressure on the pool tank structure. The pool was designed to resist both uplift from pool buoyancy and the water pressure when the pool is full, and Zypex was used to prevent water migration either from within the pool or out of the pool.
LEED Gold Certification
The facility was developed with extensive input from the community by the design team of Gibbs Gage Architects and ISL’s Structural-Buildings discipline. The project is targeting LEED® Gold certification.
