Jasper Avenue is Edmonton’s premier main street, connecting the West End to Downtown Edmonton through the historic and diverse neighbourhood of Oliver. ISL Engineering and Land Services (ISL) led the Imagine Jasper Avenue streetscape project with DIALOG to conceptually plan the Avenue’s transformation from a vehicle-oriented corridor to one that accommodates all users and supports economic revitalization.

Once the transformation is completed, Jasper Avenue will be a vibrant, all seasons downtown destination and a place of social gathering that is both accessible and inclusive. The space will offer a safe and secure environment in all seasons and at all times of the day. Jasper Avenue will become an inviting neighbourhood amenity that commemorates the Avenue’s vibrant history and the diversity of its people.

ISL was able to develope an approach to reach out to a crosssection of external stakeholders that involved the creation of the Community Business Residential Committee (CBRC). This involved regular meetings with 12 to 15 individuals that represented various stakeholder groups to find the common interest.

ISL also hosted a series of workshops and design charrettes to work through challenges related to maintenance and operations.

In particular, Main Streets Guideline was an initiative that had a direct impact on the project. Early on, Jasper Avenue was identified as a main street and the two projects were communicated as one to stakeholders and the public.
