Channel Protection

After the devastating flood in June 2013 caused widespread damage to properties, highways and infrastructure along Cougar Creek, the Town of Canmore had to act quickly to provide an engineered solution and reconstruct the Creek before the 2014 spring run-off.

The Town of Canmore retained ISL to provide detail design drawings, tender and construction administration services for the first phase mitigation of the Channel Bank Protection. Also included in this work was the relocation of one pedestrian bridge, installation of foundations for second pedestrian bridge, and landscape plans along Cougar Creek.

Phase one of the Cougar Creek restoration project was completed in Fall of 2015. This phase of the project included a master plan design for the entire Cougar Creek Corridor and implementation of general grading and landscaping.
ISL identified opportunities for site amenities including rest areas, connections to the existing bridges, preservation of existing trees, and reestablishment of large vegetation areas along the corridor. Pre-grading for trail facilities and landscaping restoration between the property line and the proposed trail along Cougar Creek.
Phase 2 of the Cougar Creek Project will also include:
  1. Integration of corridor amenities including granular trails and a bicycle commuter focused, asphalt pathway;
  2. Establish locations for interpretive signage;
  3. Establish locations for wayfinding; and
  4. Providing seating areas that enhance the trail user’s experience along the creek corridor.
