Project Description:

Originally built in 1958, the Banff Fenlands Recreation Centre was in need of redevelopment to provide a beautiful and lasting structure for the community and visitors.

Working with the Town of Banff the project team was able to deliver on this ambitious goal to create a new multi-use facility which includes a new curling rink, new ice surface, a new second ice rink, dryland training space, and community and professional sized change rooms.

To design the new curling rink from six sheets of ice down to four, ISL reused Glulam beams from the decommissioned curling rink along with recycled materials from Lawrence Grassi Middle School in Canmore these beams created the stunning arch structure. This arch created a sloped wall with an incredible backdrop of Mount Norquay, and leaves viewers of the TSN All-Star Curling Skins Game with spectacular views every year

The building was constructed using timber trusses, engineered wood products, concrete foundations, recycled wood products and existing building ties.

These decisions served to minimize waste, reduce transportation energy and reduce VOCs and toxic materials, allowing the project to be completed in 2011 to LEED® Silver certification.
