About This Project

ISL and CH2M Hill partnered as lead consultants to the City of Calgary for functional planning, design and construction of a grade separated interchange at Glenmore Trail and 37 Street SW.

Key innovations included building Calgary’s first roundabout interchange, and design of a recyclable overpass bridge with a pre-cast superstructure built in a record-setting 23 days. The goal of opening Glenmore Trail to free flow traffic and removing commuter congestion for over 70,000 vehicles per day has been a publicly stated objective of the City for well over a decade. This project solved the long-standing issue in only five months.

ISL’s services on the $12.3-million project included transportation functional planning and preliminary design; traffic analysis and modelling; community liaison; detailed bridge structure design; stormwater systems; detours and staging; pavement structure; utility and streetlight coordination; tender preparation; tender award recommendations; project management and cost control.

ISL and CH2M Hill designed an innovative, temporary, low-cost interchange, away from the SWRR, that would serve as the detour for eventual SWRR construction.

The tight schedule was managed by partnering and
using an Integrated Project Delivery approach

ISL’s sustainability decisions included reusing existing girders and not having piles for the abutments, making the panels fully reusable and enabling easier dismantling of the temporary overpass bridge
