About This Project

The Highway 3 corridor between Manning Park and the Town of Princeton consisted of a single lane in each direction with minimal passing opportunities. The highway navigated treacherous mountain terrain with numerous sharp curves, and during the summer months, the increased volume of recreational traffic leads to extremely slow travel times. ISL was retained by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) to design improvements to the highway’s safety and mobility along a 5km stretch, including meeting a 100km/h design speed and improving passing opportunities.

Restricted by steep mountainous terrain, including creeks and wetlands, ISL developed multiple alignment options in order to determine the optimal alignment needed to “thread the needle” through the challenging landscape. Each conceptual design alignment was judged using various criteria, including geometric, environmental, speed profile, collision and cost. The designed realignment with new passing lanes required excavations up to 25m deep and fills up to 30m high.
