About This Project
The McCallum Road interchange provides an important access into the City of Abbotsford but was considered at capacity with just a two-lane bridge crossing the Trans- Canada Highway (Highway 1). Congestion and access in and out of the city were a problem. There were also several inefficiencies in the surrounding road network. Enabled by Federal stimulus funding, ISL managed a team of consultants delivering this $25-million interchange upgrade project, which included replacement of the bridge with a 4-lane overpass, and a transit exchange. ISL’s alternative interchange design had significant sustainability advantages. It has reduce vehicular delay in and around the interchange by 46%. This means an annual reduction of 6.5 million kilometres and 650,000 hours of travel time; resulting in a 1.6 kiloton reduction in CO2 emissions per year—a saving equivalent to permanently removing 388 vehicles from the road.
