Welcome to ISL’s Young Professionals! We feature ISLers who are taking the engineering world by storm. Get to know what led them to a career in engineering, what their day-to-day looks like and what they think sets ISL apart.
Meet Jordan Quick, a Municipal Engineer based in our Calgary office. Jordan has been with ISL for over 7 years.
Jordan Quick, P.Eng
Municipal Engineer, Calgary
What is your role at ISL?
Municipal Engineer
What big project are you working on right now (or have you recently completed)?
I’m currently working on a water and sanitary replacement project which I worked on from putting together the tender, completing the design, and am now working on the construction contract administration. The project includes over 1.4 km of water and sanitary main replacement, water fittings, sanitary manholes, roadworks, and concrete works on two project sites.
When and why did you decide you wanted to be an engineer?
When I was about 8, my mom, grandma, and I were talking about different types of careers and at some point, my mom asked what I wanted to do. Without any hesitation I said “I want to build things” and she responded with “like a construction worker?” I said “No, I don’t want to do the building I want to be part of building it.” My mom then said “Oh, you want to be an Engineer.”
After some explanation I declared “Yes, that’s what I want to do!”
Why: I’ve always been fascinated with the way things work, always asking why something was the way it was or what made it work that way.
What was the path you took to get to where you are today? (school, volunteering, work experience/co-ops, networking, ect.)
I took three years off after high school because even though I was pretty sure of what I wanted to do, I knew I wasn’t quite ready. So I worked, volunteered, and fell in love with travelling. In 2010 I was accepted into the University of Calgary Engineering program and soon realized that Civil Engineering was the path I wanted to take. Fast forward to third year, I hadn’t worked in industry yet so I decided to enter the internship program. A family member suggested ISL so I applied for a 16 month internship and the rest is history!
What’s your favourite thing about what you do?
It’s really hard to choose just one. It’s a tie between working with amazing people and working on a variety of projects that all have their own unique challenges that we get to solve!
What does a typical day at ISL look like for you? (coffee, inspections, site visits, phone calls, team meetings, design, emails, ect.)
During construction season a typical day is early morning to play with my dog, breakfast, coffee, site inspections, paperwork, emails, meetings/phone calls, hangout with my dog, more emails, more paperwork, hopefully read the current book for book club, bed, start all over again. In none construction season, site inspection is replaced with design.
What are some of your favourite ISL experiences? (Cool projects, social events/charitable initiatives, daily office life, ect.)
As most of my coworkers will attest to, I’m an extreme extrovert and love being social. The yearly staff seminar is a huge favourite but I can usually be found at any social event or participating in a charitable initiative!
Where do you hope to be in 10 years?
In 10 years I hope to be a team lead in the ISL Calgary Municipal group running my own projects and mentoring future young engineers.
