EDMONTON REMAND CENTRE

The Edmonton New Remand Centre is the largest, most technologically advanced remand facility in Canada and replaces the 33-year-old remand centre in downtown Edmonton. ISL was part of a design team for the new facility, which was developed on a 16.5-hectare greenfield site to LEED Silver criteria for Alberta Infrastructure. ISL undertook all civil engineering components of this 1,952-bed facility, including site development. The project included significant site utilities, stormwater management, site access, parking lots, service roads, and site grading. The overall site was raised in the order of 1.5 metres to provide a solid foundation for the multiple building complex on the site. Since there was no municipal stormwater system in the area,

ISL used an innovative approach to managing storm runoff within the existing drainage basin: stormwater is treated to remove sediments and phosphates in a constructed forebay and then released to a native wetland to recharge groundwater or evaporate.
