About This Project

Eventyre Farms is a private equestrian facility located near Calgary, Alberta. At approximately 38,000 ft2, the building houses a full-size indoor show jumping arena with a viewing deck and platform, bay for transport truck and horse trailer, grooming stalls, tack rooms, stalls for 18 horses, veterinary care room, laundry facility with an industrial washer and dryer and an indoor warmdown ring to accommodate 10 to 12 horses after their workouts.

The design intent worked around a simple narrative – to provide a state-of-the-art training facility for showjumping. While the Client initially had a preference for wood after seeing and using facilities constructed and finished with it, budgeting was also presented for steel, pre-fabricated steel and a hybrid with concrete walls

From there, the decision was made to move forward using wood as the primary structural and finish material because it not only allowed the building to be constructed in a simple and cost-effective manner, but also formed the elegant and efficient structure the Client desired, was sustainable and allowed more design flexibility than other materials. The result is a building that is not only specific to this very use for trainers, horses, athletes, support staff and services but is unparalleled in Western Canada.

The team created a roof overhang to increase protection of the structural members exposed to the weather. They also designed the outermost lamination of the facility to be sacrificial and non-structural, allowing it to be replaced if it becomes overly weathered.

Pre-engineered connectors also allowed the arches to be shipped in two halves and assembled on-site.
