Shoreline Trail Boardwalk Replacement
Inclusive, climate resilient access to Port Moody’s environmentally sensitive waterfront
Client: City of Port Moody
Location: Burrard Inlet, Port Moody, BC
Project Type: Landscape Architecture, Environment, Special Structures
About This Project
The Shoreline Trail Boardwalk Replacement project spans 550 m and forms part of the 3 km Shoreline Trail along the southeast shore of Burrard Inlet. The boardwalk, bridge, and trail system cross rare and environmentally sensitive tidal marshes, intertidal wetlands, tidal‑influenced forest, and fish‑bearing creeks. The new elevated boardwalk replaces a deteriorating, low‑lying structure and achieves three key goals: lifting the trail above king tides and rising sea levels, improving accessibility by removing stairs and steep ramps, and restoring and protecting sensitive shoreline habitat for fish, birds, and plants.
ISL designed the elevated boardwalk, viewing platforms, and bridges, and restored intertidal wetlands previously disrupted by a raised trail. The project scope included conceptual design options (fixed, float, and lift structures), foreshore ecological restoration, archaeological and environmental permitting, detailed design, construction documentation, tendering, and construction administration. The boardwalk, trail, and shoreline restoration design respond to topographical, geotechnical, tidal, environmental, and archaeological studies that informed the project. The work also included installing a Tsleil‑Waututh Nation house post at a viewing platform—one of five Coast Salish house posts introduced around Burrard Inlet.
Today, the Shoreline Trail Boardwalk is a much‑used and valued community asset that provides inclusive, climate‑resilient access to Port Moody’s environmentally sensitive waterfront.
