WEST CAMPUS GREENWAY
A safe, welcoming and inclusive campus connector.
Client: University of Victoria
Location: Victoria, BC
Project Type: Municipal, Landscape Architecture
About This Project
The West Campus Greenway is the first phase of the University of Victoria’s Campus Greenway, a multi-use pathway designed to connect key campus facilities, academic spaces, and social hubs along the east-west spine of the campus. ISL provided detailed design, construction drawings and construction review services to guide the implementation of this 400-meter section, which serves as a precedent for future phases of the greenway.
The multi-use pathway provides bi-directional travel lanes for pedestrians, cyclists, and mobility aid modes, improving safety and accessibility across campus. Two signalized road crossings and pathway lighting further enhances the safety of Greenway users. Key elements include a campus entry plaza with signage and a planned First Nations gateway feature at its western end, plazas at road crossings, timber decks overlooking ponds and wetlands, and seating nodes with custom furnishings, paving patterns, and wayfinding signage. The landscape design reinforces the character of the Garry Oak meadow and woodland areas the Greenway passes through, enhancing the ecological value and resiliency of both spaces.
Through thoughtful planning and design, ISL helped deliver a safer, more connected active transportation corridor that celebrates the University’s cultural and environmental values while improving the east-west campus experience for all users.
