Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA) recently featured transportation engineer, Alana Getty Somers, P.Eng. in their 2022 Alberta Innovators magazine.
Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA) celebrates engineers and projects for how they innovate, add value and advance technology in the field. Published once a year, Alberta Innovators provides in-depth information on the consulting engineering industry in Alberta and celebrates Showcase Award winners.
The Showcase Awards recognize excellence in consulting engineering in Alberta. ISL was part of the winning team featured for Calgary’s Crowchild Trail Short-Term Improvements project, winning the Award of Merit for both Project Management and Transportation Infrastructure – roads, interchanges, airports, mass transit and the Award of Excellence for Transportation Infrastructure – Transportation Structures.
The 2022 edition of the magazine also focused on 3 individuals for their spotlight series on innovators in the province. Alana was one of them.
Known for her strong leadership and communication skills, Alana brings together a wide array of project stakeholders and members of the public, local municipalities, business communities, and regulatory agencies on complex projects. She delivers a wide range of projects through the iterative design and environmental impact processes in both urban and rural settings, from functional planning to construction. Alana has been a key player in delivering many complex infrastructure projects in Calgary as a consultant for a variety of clients since 2006.
About Alana Getty Somers, P.Eng.
Born and raised in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Alana has over 20 years’ experience in both government roles and consulting engineering.
She spent the first six years of her career in Minneapolis where she quickly moved into project management roles and a portfolio of projects with capital costs over $1 billion. Alana returned to Canada in 2006 and has been involved with major infrastructure projects in Calgary as a consultant for a variety of clients ever since.
In 2010, she received CEA’s Rising Young Professional Award. She joined ISL as a senior project manager in 2015, earned her current role as Transportation General Manager in 2017 and her place on ISL’s Board of Directors in 2020. She leads ISL Calgary’s transportation team and oversees our diverse slate of successful transportation projects.
Alana’s knack for people and relationships quickly earns respect from new stakeholders, teams and clients. With her extensive expertise managing projects and leading teams with technical subject matter experts, she ably navigates where egos and preconceived ideas threaten to block creative and innovative solutions.
Alana continuously seeks to improve and to create safe, inviting spaces for diverse perspectives.
