About This Project
The University of Alberta’s Devonian Botanic Garden is a stunning 190-acre property located near Devon, Alberta. It includes a variety of gardens, mixed woodland vegetation and an extensive nature trail system. Design of the Devonian Botanic Garden is based on the park master plan and development guidelines prepared in 1988 by Butler, Krebes & Associates (now part of ISL). Development of the site included land use, circulation and site amenity details.
The same year, the firm led an international team to design the Kurimoto Japanese Garden. This beautiful garden is a place for meditation and contemplation and is a popular highlight of the Devonian Botanic Garden.

As prime consultant, the firm was responsible for plant procurement, contract documents, supervision of the infrastructure components and project administration. The planting and rock placement was directed by a supervisor from Japan.
The Japanese Garden opened to the public in 1990. More recently ISL has provided further Land Development and architectural services. In 2015, ISL was retained by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects to complete site grading, servicing, and stormwater management for the garden.
