PORT MANN HIGHWAY 1 – KING EDWARD STREET UNDERPASS

The new King Edward Street underpass improves the linkage over Highway 1 for the City of Coquitlam.

Client: Transportation Investment Corporation

Location: Coquitlam, BC, Canada

Project Type: Transportation

ISL Role: Subconsultant

About This Project

The existing King Edward Street overpass needed to be replaced to accommodate widening Highway 1 from six to ten lanes as part of the $3-billion Port Mann Highway 1 Design-Build project. TI-Corp also took this opportunity to correct a decades-old problem with the highway’s vertical alignment by dropping its grade. ISL was selected to provided road and utility design services on the project, which included a 4-lane, 160-metre long bridge with bicycle lanes on each side and a multi-use path on the west side, plus approach roads including King Edward Street embankments, realignment of Woolridge Street and United Boulevard. The project’s capital value was approximately $40 million.

The new King Edward Street underpass improves the linkage over Highway 1 for the City of Coquitlam.

It also provides significant opportunities for residential development on the highway’s south side as well as additional growth opportunities for commercial and industrial development in the area. The project increased traffic capacity along King Edward Street, while providing for the safety of all road users with added lanes, cycle lanes and separate multi-use path for vulnerable road users.

The team coordinated and designed the inclusion of multiple utilities inside the limited right of way (gas, hydro, telephone, sanitary, storm, and water)

Detours were designed to facilitate staging of Highway 1 reprofiling and demolition of the existing King Edward overpass
