ISL served as a Diamond Sponsor of SMSB 2026, the 12th International Conference on Short and Medium Span Bridges, held in Vancouver August 4 to 7 under the theme Shaping the Future of Bridge Engineering: Low Carbon, Resilience and Automation. Our team connected with bridge engineers, asset managers and industry peers from across the country at Booth 17 throughout the four-day event. Scott Loptson, P.Eng., F.E.C. and Sadegh Kazemi, Ph.D., P.Eng. led a half-day short course on practical asset management for bridge engineers, joined by Joseph Adom, P.Eng. of BC MoTT, covering inspection planning, condition assessment and renewal strategy selection drawn from British Columbia bridge practice. Bhaskar Swaroop, M.Eng., P.Eng. and James Chapman, M.Sc., P.Eng. presented a case study on the design and construction of the flared steel girder bridge carrying Highway 22 over Highway 1A and the CPKC railway at the Hwy 1A/Hwy 22 interchange in Cochrane, AB, focusing on how close collaboration between designer, fabricator and contractor resolved the geometric and logistical challenges of building on a constrained site. ISL also hosted a client reception to connect with partners and peers from across the industry. ISL joined transportation professionals from across the country at the ITE Canada District 2026 Annual Conference in Victoria, themed Creating Connections Through Transportation. Our team led a Student Leadership Summit session on sustainability and Indigenous values, supported the City of Victoria’s neighbourhood bike tours, and presented on three recent projects: the Yates and Fort Street intersection redesign, the Squamish Multi-Modal Transportation Plan and the Vancouver to SFU Cycling Connection. The Guildford Way Complete Street project, delivered with the City of Coquitlam, received the Canadian nomination for the ITE Complete Street Transportation Achievement Award, with the winner announced in Detroit this July. The ITE Northern Alberta Section also took home the 2026 Section Momentum Award for its community-building work over the past year.
