WEST CAMPUS GREENWAY

A Complete Street that prioritizes safety and embraces European design principles.

Client: University of Victoria

Location: Victoria, BC

Project Type: Landscape Architecture

About This Project

The West Campus Greenway is the first phase of the University of Victoria’s Campus Greenway, a multi-use pathway designed to connect key campus facilities, academic spaces, and social hubs along the east-west spine of the campus. ISL provided detailed design and construction drawings to guide the implementation of this 400-meter section, which serves as a precedent for future phases of the greenway.

The pathway features separated travel spaces for pedestrians, cyclists, and other human-powered modes, improving safety and accessibility across campus. Key elements include a campus entry plaza with signage and a First Nations gateway feature at its western end, plazas at road crossings, timber decks over ponds and wetlands, and seating nodes with custom furnishings, paving patterns, and interpretive signage. The design reinforces the character of the Garry Oak meadow and woodland areas it passes through, enhancing both ecological value and campus aesthetics.

Through thoughtful planning and design, ISL helped deliver a safer, more connected active transportation corridor that celebrates the University’s cultural and environmental values while improving the east-west experience for all users.
