Walterdale Bridge
Redefining Edmonton’s skyline
Client: City of Edmonton
Location: Edmonton, AB
Project Type: Transportation, Structural
About This Project
The Walterdale Bridge Replacement stands as one of the most complex infrastructure projects undertaken by the City of Edmonton—and today, it is a defining feature of the city’s skyline. The new bridge has transformed transportation across the North Saskatchewan River, improving access for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists alike, all while becoming an architectural icon for Edmonton.
Located in the heart of Edmonton’s river valley, the project navigated a challenging landscape that included sensitive natural environments, historically significant areas, a former industrial plant, and a major recreation centre. The corridor serves as a critical northbound route into the downtown core and includes vital connections to active transportation and recreational trail networks.
ISL led this high-profile $132 million project, managing project partners Al-Terra Engineering and DIALOG while delivering a full suite of services. Our team provided project management; preliminary and detailed design for roadways, stormwater systems, and the hollow bridge abutments—featuring a precast girder roof system and deep foundation piles—as well as the north promenade wall.
ISL coordinated and oversaw a complex, multi-disciplinary team responsible for bridge design, landscape architecture, historical and cultural review, environmental assessments, utility design and coordination, public and Indigenous engagement, construction services, contract administration, and roadway safety audits.
The completed bridge not only meets the City’s mobility needs but reinforces Edmonton’s identity through a modern and attention-grabbing infrastructure.
