About This Project
Located in the heart of Whitehorse’s Robert Service Campground, this 356 m² facility was designed to serve as a flexible, all-season community hub for the City of Whitehorse. Featuring a large multi-use space, gender neutral washrooms, office space, commercial kitchen, storage, and breakout rooms, the building enhances the campground’s amenities while supporting broader community programming and recreation needs.
ISL provided structural engineering services for the new facility, which features a hybrid structural system of glulam and steel moment frames supporting structural insulated panel (SIP) wall and roof assemblies. Built atop a monolithic slab-on-grade concrete foundation, the structure was designed with prefabrication and ease of construction in mind – key considerations given the Yukon’s short building season.
To meet the City’s construction budget, ISL simplified the framing design without compromising integrity or performance.
ISL developed the design in Revit, enabling seamless coordination with other disciplines and early identification of potential mechanical clashes. The 3D model was shared directly with suppliers, ensuring precise integration of materials and dimensions, particularly for the complex skewed entrance columns. Throughout, the project was delivered on time and on budget, with careful coordination during shop drawing review to align glulam, steel, and SIP components for efficient assembly.
