Old Territorial Administration Building Revitalization

Revitalizing a historic Yukon landmark while preserving its heritage structure and supporting new museum exhibits.

Client: Kobayashi + Zedda Architects

Location: Dawson City, YT

Project Type: Heritage Structures, Buildings

About This Project

The Old Territorial Administration Building is one of Dawson City’s most significant heritage landmarks and an important part of Yukon’s cultural history. Revitalizing the building required carefully balancing modern structural upgrades with the preservation of its historic character.

ISL provided structural engineering services for the multi-year restoration and recapitalization of the building, supporting Kobayashi + Zedda Architects in strengthening the structure while respecting its heritage status. A comprehensive structural analysis informed upgrades delivered through two phased construction packages between 2021 and 2023. These upgrades also enabled the Dawson City Museum to install new exhibitions and casework as part of the city’s 125th anniversary celebrations.

With more than a century of undocumented structural modifications, the project required extensive investigation. ISL conducted in-service grading of the building’s historic timber members, allowing the team to accurately assess their strength and avoid unnecessary structural interventions that could impact heritage materials.

Working in Dawson City’s remote Northern environment also presented logistical challenges. ISL collaborated closely with the heritage architect and maintained a local presence during construction to support site reviews and rapid problem-solving.

Through careful analysis, collaboration, and respect for the building’s heritage fabric, ISL helped extend the life of this historic landmark, ensuring it can continue serving the community and sharing Dawson City’s history for generations to come.
