National Indigenous Peoples Day

Today marks National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to honor the rich cultures and heritage of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada.

Indigenous groups and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on June 21 for generations due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.

National Indigenous Peoples Day is the first celebration in the annual nationwide ‘Celebrate Canada’ period, which includes St-Jean Baptiste Day, Canadian Multiculturalism Day and concludes with Canada Day.

Every year, diverse events and activities are held to showcase Indigenous art, music and traditions.
