About This Project
The Brazeau Collieries complex near Nordegg, Alberta, is one of the most complete surviving examples of coal-mining industrial architecture in western Canada. Recognized as both a National and Provincial Historic Resource, the site includes a briquetting plant, coal-processing facilities, trestle bridges, support buildings and mine entries dating to the early 20th century, reflecting Alberta’s early coal industry and the development of railway-driven resource extraction.
ISL has been working closely with Clearwater County since October 2021 as prime consultant on the preservation and rehabilitation of the historic mine site coal processing structures, with work expected to continue through 2028.
ISL’s teams began with comprehensive structural and civil engineering assessments to evaluate the condition of aging coal-processing buildings, their foundations, mine-related infrastructure and site drainage. This included detailed structural reviews, surveying and the development of recommendations to guide long-term conservation planning.
As the county advanced its phased rehabilitation program, ISL provided structural design, landscape and civil engineering support to preserve the structures, improve public safety, manage vegetation, enhance site access and address erosion and rainwater issues that had contributed to structural deterioration.
Given budget constraints, ISL developed a weighted rubric to guide prioritization, balancing structural risk, tour route considerations and repair difficulty to rank which structures are most in need of attention. This approach allows Clearwater County to focus resources on the highest-priority structures first. ISL is also supporting the county’s pursuit of provincial and national grant funding, including through Alberta’s historic resources program and the Parks Canada Agency’s national cost-sharing program.
ISL’s ongoing work helps keep the buildings structurally stable and safely accessible, positioning the site for expanded interpretive programming and tourism. By integrating technical expertise with heritage conservation priorities, ISL supports Clearwater County’s long-term vision for preserving and revitalizing this nationally significant industrial landscape.
