About This Project

The Flanders Avenue Interchange on Crowchild Trail stands at the crossroads of Calgary’s history, serving as the front entrance to the former Currie Barracks at Canadian Forces Base Calgary since it opened in the mid-20th century. Following closure of the base in the late 1990s, Canada Lands Company (CLC) has led the redevelopment of the surrounding lands into some of Calgary’s most innovative and sought-after neighbourhoods. The newly-emerging Currie neighbourhoods will be the culmination and crowning achievement of CLC’s vision for the Currie Barracks lands, creating a comprehensively planned urban community in the heart of Calgary.

Looking for a solution to improve access and comfort for all modes of transportation, CLC engaged ISL Engineering and Land Services (ISL) to lead the planning for upgrades to the Flanders Avenue Interchange. Through a comprehensive technical evaluation and community engagement process, ISL developed an innovative interchange design that fits the existing urban context, opens up new access opportunities and accommodates future growth in Currie and the surrounding region. As Alberta’s first interchange with multi-lane roundabouts, it uses a unique series of three roundabouts to connect seven streets through a single overpass location.

CLC subsequently partnered with The City of Calgary (The City) to implement and jointly fund construction of the interchange, retaining ISL as Owner’s Engineer for a Design- Build procurement model. Associated Engineering (Associated) entered the scene as Engineer of Record on a proponent team led by Westpro Infrastructure. Their successful response to the request for proposals featured several innovative cost-saving features including flanged box girders and a three-span bridge. Associated guided the project team through design and construction of the interchange, bringing the functional design to life within the specifications and process first set out by ISL. The cooperative approach of the consulting team exemplifies the value of industry collaboration embodied by the Consulting Engineers of Alberta, and delivered excellence in transportation infrastructure and project management for Calgarians.

Uniting Communities

CLC envisioned the Flanders Avenue bridge as a gateway into the emerging Currie community. The appearance of the bridge from the pathways and roadways was an important part of this project. The final result is a bridge that fits seamlessly within the contemporary and forward looking theme of Currie.

The opening of the interchange was  a much-anticipated community event that will include a street festival celebrating the reunification of area neighbourhoods across the new bridge. This achievement culminates a four year process that began with CLC’s vision for the Currie community, took form with ISL’s innovative interchange design uniting seven interconnected streets through three multi-lane roundabouts, became reality through Associated Engineering’s innovative and cost-saving design efforts, and now ends with The City of Calgary taking ownership of a revitalized interchange that will enhance mobility for generations of Calgarians to come.
