Lazo Greenway Multi-Use Pathway

A 2.6 km AAA multi-use pathway connecting communities and active transportation networks in Comox Valley

Client: Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) & Town of Comox

Location: Comox Valley, BC

Project Type: Transportation

About This Project

The Lazo Greenway Multi-Use Pathway is a 2.6 kilometre All Ages and Abilities (AAA) active transportation corridor developed through a partnership between the Comox Valley Regional District and the Town of Comox. The project improves connectivity between existing cycling and pedestrian facilities while providing a safe and accessible route through a rural-suburban area of the Comox Valley.

The corridor traverses a predominantly residential area and is closely bordered by a sensitive wetland conservation area. The route includes crossings at several residential streets, including Forester Avenue, Barber Avenue, and Beckton Drive, with major crossings at Guthrie Road and Brent Road. The eastern terminus is located at Sand Pines Drive, connecting south along Lazo Road to an existing shoreline pathway serving Point Holmes.

ISL provided route option analysis, project planning, consultation support, cost estimating, and detailed design services. The project required extensive coordination between CVRD, the Town of Comox, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit, and the CVRD Sanitary Conveyance Project team. Through proactive stakeholder engagement and integrated design development, ISL helped align project requirements, approvals, and construction sequencing. Construction was completed in the summer of 2025.

Design development focused on balancing safety, accessibility, environmental stewardship, and property impacts. Detailed corridor analysis and cross-section testing were completed to address constrained rights-of-way, frequent driveways, mature trees, and adjacent private properties. Environmental considerations were incorporated throughout the design process to minimize impacts on the adjacent wetland while maintaining a continuous AAA facility. Enhanced crossing treatments at Guthrie Road and Brent Road improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists travelling through a rural road environment.
