Project Type: Buildings
About This Project
The Martensville Community Recreation Centre (MCRC) is a $53 million community facility designed to expand recreational opportunities for the growing City of Martensville. The centre brings multiple recreation, and community uses together under one roof, including an NHL-sized ice surface with seating for 1,000 spectators, a soccer fieldhouse, climbing wall, retail areas, and multipurpose spaces.
ISL provided structural engineering services as a subconsultant to aodbt architecture + interior design, supporting the project through pre-design, preliminary and detailed design, tender administration, and construction administration. The facility combines pre-engineered building systems for the arena and fieldhouse with a conventional structural steel building connecting the two main spaces.
Integrating three separate building systems presented a significant structural coordination challenge. ISL used BIM and 3D modelling to identify and eliminate potential clashes between the pre-engineered and conventional structural systems, supporting efficient coordination throughout design and construction.
The design also considered future expansion, coordinating potential additions for increased spectator capacity and additional ice sheets to minimize future cost and rework.
Challenges
- Challenge: Building a conventional steel structure between two pre-engineered buildings systems
- Challenge: Requiring the structure to be ready for future expansion and flexibility without dramatically impacting the cost of the initial phase.
Solution
- Solution: Utilizing BIM and 3D modelling, ISL was able to eliminate potential clashes between the three separate building elements
- Solution: Coordinating schematic level design for future additions for both spectator seating and additional ice sheets to ensure capacity was provided where necessary and flexibility is provided to allow for future changes, minimizing cost and rework
