Sanitary Trunk Main at Nita Lake Lodge

Repairing critical sewer infrastructure beneath active rail to ensure long-term reliability and safety.

Client: Resort Municipality of Whistler

Location: Whistler, BC

Project Type: Environment, Water

About This Project

A significant portion of the existing sanitary trunk main for the Resort Municipality of Whistler aligns parallel and immediately adjacent to the existing CN Rail tracks. Through evaluation of CCTV works, a joint separation of 150mm was identified and required repair. Due to the depth of the existing main and its proximity to the trackline, shutdown and temporary removal of the track was required facilitate the works.

ISL was retained by the Resort Municipality of Whistler to manage their Nita Lake Trunk Main Repair Project. The scope was to provide design, contract administration, project management and site inspection services. The repair project included the following:

  • Bypass of sanitary sewer trunk main
  • Repair of 675mmø concrete sanitary sewer trunk main under CN railway

ISL took significant time brainstorming what the risks were and documenting concerns. Our Environmental Engineer worked closely and were aware of the tight construction schedule. Time was spent on planning/sequencing including performing a mock-up repair couplings to determine how long repair will take, in the end the pipes were coupled back together.
