Squamish Transportation Master Plan

Long-range transportation plan aligning growth with a safe, multimodal, and financially feasible network

Client: District of Squamish

Location: Squamish, BC

Project Type: Transportation, Networks

About This Project

Squamish’s Multi-Modal Transportation Plan provides a forward-looking framework to support a growing community with a safe, efficient, and inclusive transportation system. The planning process combined detailed data collection, review of existing policies, and advanced transportation modelling to better understand how future growth could be accommodated within the existing network.

Rather than relying on the traditional model of forecasting future vehicle demand and expanding road capacity accordingly, the plan identifies the level of mode shift required to support growth and outlines practical strategies to increase walking, cycling, and transit use. A complete multimodal network was developed, along with prioritized improvements and targeted transit upgrades to strengthen connections across the community.

Extensive engagement played a central role, with two rounds of consultation involving hundreds of participants through both online and in-person activities. Input from residents, interest holders, and equity-deserving groups helped shape the vision, identify key issues, and refine recommended solutions.

The final plan includes a phased and financially realistic implementation strategy aligned with community priorities. Now approved by Council, it provides a clear roadmap to guide investment, improve safety, and support a more connected and accessible transportation system as Squamish continues to grow.
