The Loft on 2nd
Structural design for a six-storey mixed-use building with an underground parkade in downtown Whitehorse.
Client: PCR Construction
Location: Whitehorse, Yukon
Project Type: Buildings, Transportation
About This Project
The Loft on Second is a multi-family development on Second Avenue in downtown Whitehorse. The building sits over a below-grade parkade, with commercial and retail space on the main floor and five wood-framed luxury residential storeys above. Penthouse units occupy the sixth floor with a mass timber roof, and timber accents carry through the building. Residents have underground parking and outdoor amenity spaces, and the development includes accessible units.
ISL provided the full structural design and input on the building envelope. Much of what defines the living spaces comes back to the structure. Penthouse units feature 20-foot vaulted ceilings with exposed beams, two-storey windows that bring in plenty of natural light and private decks with views. ISL’s structural design supports these open, bright spaces within a wood-framed building.
At the start of the project, ISL also completed a Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA), which looks at how a new development will affect traffic on the surrounding streets.
