About This Project
The Vision Truck Group Headquarters is a 45,000-square-foot (4,180 m2) facility in Cambridge, Ontario, combining a two-storey office wing with a nearly nine-metre-high showroom. Designed to accommodate both office spaces and customer-facing spaces, the building features an extensive mass timber structural system that brings together functionality, open interior spaces, and architectural expression.
ISL provided specialized structural engineering services as a subconsultant to Kalesnikoff Mass Timber Inc., the project’s mass timber supplier. ISL was responsible for designing connections throughout the glulam and cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure, including beam-to-beam, beam-to-column, steel brace-to-column, column-to-foundation, CLT shearwall-to-foundation, and diaphragm-splice connections. The team also developed a 3D Cadwork fabrication model, prepared layout drawings, and sealed shop drawings for connections within its scope.
A defining feature of the facility is its showroom roof, supported by an angled, V-shaped arrangement of glulam columns. Developed through the evaluation of multiple structural concepts, this system achieves clear spans of approximately 33 by 13 metres, created an open floor area that accommodates truck movement and display while showcasing the exposed timber structure.
Delivering the specialized connection design required close coordination with the project’s structural Engineer or Record, Moses Structural Engineers, to address load transfer throughout the mass timber system. ISL also collaborated with the architect to accommodate one-hour fire-resistance requirements for exposed structural members supporting occupied spaces, while coordinating with Kalesnikoff Mass Timber and Timmerman Timberworks to support fabrication and installation sequencing.
