WEST CALGARY RING ROAD
Innovative stormwater systems enhance highway safety in a complex design-build project.
Client: EllisDon
Location: Calgary, AB
Project Type: Transportation
About This Project
This transformative transportation project involved designing and constructing a systems interchange at Highway 1 and Stoney Trail, a service interchange at Valley Ridge Boulevard, and extending Stoney Trail south to Old Banff Coach Road.
ISL delivered stormwater solutions for the project. Scope included the design of nine stormwater storage facilities—eight wet ponds and one constructed wetland—along with major and minor stormwater conveyance infrastructure. A notable feature was the terraced pond system, carefully integrated into the sloped terrain adjacent to the highway, which incorporated dam safety considerations and mitigated groundwater springs that flowed through the project site.
ISL collaborated with transportation, geotechnical, and structural engineers to develop designs in parallel with ongoing construction. The team conducted stormwater modeling, created management and pond reports, and generated detailed construction drawings. The fast-paced nature of the design-build process required agility to adapt to field conditions, ensuring solutions met Alberta Transportation, Alberta Environment, and City of Calgary approvals.
