WEST CALGARY RING ROAD
Supporting safe and sustainable travel for a vital piece of Calgary’s transportation infrastructure.
Client: EllisDon
Location: Calgary, AB
Project Type: Transportation
About This Project
ISL played a key role in the West Calgary Ring Road project, which included interchanges at Highway 1/Stoney Trail and Valley Ridge Boulevard, plus an extension of Stoney Trail to Old Banff Coach Road. Our scope included stormwater management, construction staging and detour design, and utility coordination.
ISL designed nine stormwater management facilities—eight wet ponds and one constructed wetland—along with major/minor stormwater conveyance facilities. A terraced pond system was integrated into the sloped terrain, incorporating dam safety and managing groundwater springs. Our stormwater systems met City of Calgary water quality targets and were coordinated with future developments and drainage plans.
Our team developed construction staging and detour plans to maintain traffic flow, minimize disruptions, and support efficient project delivery. This included a temporary bridge detouring Highway 1 traffic during interchange construction and sequencing that considered all major work packages within a constrained right-of-way.
ISL collaborated with transportation, geotechnical, and structural engineers to develop designs in parallel with ongoing construction. The fast-paced nature of the design-build process required agility to adapt to field conditions, ensuring solutions met Alberta Transportation, Alberta Environment, and City of Calgary approvals.
The completed project improves daily commutes, reduces congestion and emissions, enhances access to surrounding communities, and strengthens Calgary’s transportation link to the Rockies.
