Project Description

The Inlet Boardwalk Replacement project extends 440 m and forms part of the Shoreline Trail that runs 2.0 km along the south-east shore of the Burrard Inlet. The boardwalk, bridge and trail system cross rare and environmentally sensitive tidal marshes, intertidal wetlands, and fish-bearing streams. The boardwalk and trail are periodically overtopped by ‘king tide’ waters and threatened by rising sea levels, due to climate change. The existing boardwalk and bridge system also present public safety and accessibility issues.

ISL is tasked with redesigning the boardwalk system and restoring the surrounding intertidal wetlands, hydrologically disrupted with the introduction of the elevated trail. Project scope includes conceptual design options of the boardwalk (including fixed, float and lift boardwalk options), Green Shores armoring of the shoreline, ecological restoration of the foreshore, archaeological and environmental permitting, detailed design, construction documentation, tendering and construction administration services. The boardwalk, trail, and shoreline restoration design is responsive to topographical, geotechnical, tidal dynamic, environmental, and archaeological studies that formed part of the project scope. The project is currently in the design phase with tender and construction services scheduled for 2023.

The Inlet Boardwalk Replacement project is being delivered in association with another project ISL has with the City. The Shoreline House Posts project will see the introduction of five First Nations art installations along the Shoreline Trail, complete with surrounding viewing platforms, interpretive signage, and Indigenous planting.
